Textile Art

I like to work with dyed textiles, which I combine into a work of art depending on the colour and pattern.  The focus is on assemblage: selecting suitable pieces, arranging them sometimes deliberately, sometimes intuitively, emphasising contrasts or similarities, creating connections by stitching between the pieces and placing them next to or on top of each other. These joints often have a metaphorical meaning.

A multicultural society is an interplay of colours. You can see connections everywhere. The colour of one reappears in the other. This creates harmony, but also diversity. There are strong contrasts, which become interesting when people work together. There are gentle shades, apparent similarities that nevertheless represent a difference. Everything combined results in a cheerful, colourful picture.

Seeing things only in black or white is narrow-minded. Yet we all tend to do so. We like one thing and reject the other. Often we don't even see the many shades and nuances. Recognising these, formulating a ‘maybe’, could help us to broaden our thinking and allow for compromises and alternatives.

Two very similar and yet not identical textiles are ‘paired’ with each other, resulting in an overlap.
20 of these pairs hang next to and under each other, creating a repetition, a pattern. Each pair stands alone, but is similar to the others in the form of the overlap. What do we see: the similarities or the differences?

‘Birds of a feather flock together’. Is similarity, the same skin colour, origin, upbringing, interests, etc. a guarantee that you will harmonise with each other? Aren't there differences despite all the overlaps? Can this be bridged? Are the overlaps the bridge? Can't we find overlaps in everyone?
